What would first come to your mind when you think of something that is a flower and yellow in colour? A sunflower of course! 🌻 Hehe I don’t know if it was also because Sunny’s birthday also happens this month of May, just 1 day apart from Yellow Day/Rose Day in Korea, that gave me the idea of making a DIY sunflower for this Korean couple day (as you know Sunny’s name is almost synonymous with sunflowers!).
In fact, I already kind of teased what I would be making for Yellow Day/Rose Day as early as mid-April. Not just a handmade DIY sunflower, I was going to have a couple of surreal Taenggu bees buzzing around it standing in a small yellow vase too! 🐝

This Taenggu bees idea was actually adapted from my previous #52 MONTHSARY: I AM A BUSY BEE drawing of her.
So in preparation for this project, I took some time to study how to make DIY sunflowers using various mediums by watching a few youtube tutorials. I decided to try out one that is made out of crepe papers. I managed to get the crepe papers in the specific colours I would need from Popular just before the “lockdown” (or “circuit breaker”) in Singapore took effect. Then one day I sat down and started making this crepe paper sunflower but it turned out to be an epic fail. It was because the quality of crepe papers I used was different to those that were used in the youtube video. Mine was too thin and light. ☹️

Not giving up, I decided to refer to another tutorial that uses the medium that I’m more familiar with – standard coloured papers. However, I improvised my own materials or technique used along the way. For example, for the central pistil, instead of normal coloured papers, I used black and orange felts for an even more realistic effect.
So here’s the rough process of how I made it! 😙
