Yuri Birthday 2019: I ‘Mandu’ You

“Words can’t express my fillings for you.”
“We are like dumplings. We have different ingredients in us. That’s what makes us a dumpling. That’s what makes us unique.”
Ryan Hu
“Luck is like having a rice dumpling fly into your mouth.”
Japanese Proverb
“‘Oh Mickey, you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind. Hey Mickey. Hey hey Mickey!’ Face it, you didn’t read that, you sang it…”

When thinking about what to do for Yuri’s birthday artwork this year, the first thing that came to my mind is her signature hand sign shaped like a dumpling with the phrase, “I mandu you”. (Mandu means dumpling in Korean) Similar to Sooyoung’s version of “I peanut you”, “I mandu you” is like Yuri’s very own hilarious way of saying “I love you” to her fans.

Not sure exactly when she started doing this hand gesture, but the idea could have inspired from her hilarious mandu dance she did during a random sexy dance battle on Weekly Idol when SNSD appeared as guests in 2015. Watch Yuri’s mandu dance below at 2:08-3:21.

My artwork idea was to have a picture of Yuri doing the “I mandu you” hand sign, either hand drawn or printed, on a magnetic white board frame where I could put real dumpling magnets on it or over Yuri’s hand sign to portray it in a funny way. I also want to add elements of Mickey Mouse on her, for as far as I know, she’s a fan of the iconic cartoon character too and I also made her a Mickey Mouse Christmas card before in 2017.

The Mickey Mouse themed card that I made for Yuri for Xmas 2017.

So let’s get started on making it!

I got this whiteboard with a nice wooden frame from Daiso!
I edited a chosen photo of Yuri and had it printed on a piece of light orange paper.
I cut along the outline of Yuri’s figure and discarded the background.
With a UHU glu stick, I stuck Yuri’s picture down onto the bottom of my whiteboard.
I made a Mickey Mouse round ears hairband out of black paper and stuck it onto Yuri’s head.
With a mixture of red, black and blue permanent markers, I decorated the blank spaces on the whiteboard along with the words “YURI I MANDU YOU”. I had a ‘back to school’ kind of nostalgia while doing this. It was so fun and relaxing!
After a long search, I managed to source for a dumpling squishy from Carousell and some round black basic magnets from Daiso.
The double-sided tape on the magnet wasn’t strong enough to stick onto the dumpling squishy so I had to apply some white glue.
Then stuck it down onto the back of the dumpling squishy.
Then I wrapped a scotch tape around the dumpling squishy to secure the magnet down to its position and left it aside to dry. I removed the scotch tape once the white glue was fully dry and the magnet is now more firmly stuck onto the dumpling squishy.
I also made a Mickey Mouse white glove gestured in the same dumpling hand sign as Yuri with white paper and outlined with black marker.
I then stuck the black magnet onto the back of the glove with its own double-sided tape.
Now I have dumpling and Mickey Mouse hand magnets to stick on the whiteboard! Yuri can even use the magnets to stick her paper notes onto the whiteboard. 😊

And the artwork is done! Fun and fairly easy! I had lots of giggles while doing it. ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 😂

Now here come lots of dumplings with fillings of my detailed photos of the completed artwork flying into your mouth! 😂🍙🍙🍙🍙🍙🍙🍙🍙🍙🍙

Haha and the dumpling magnet is really squishy!! Feels so nice to pinch it!

In addition to the artwork, I also got Yuri a pair of dumpling earrings. Lol who is bold enough to wear them out?? 😂

Dear Yuri,

Hope this artwork can bring lots of smiles to your face and lift your mood up when times get tough like it did for me! I mandu you! 만두해 🍙❤️

With lots of love and mandu,
Celeste Koh
