Valentine’s Day is probably the most important time of the year for every couple, other than anniversaries. I definitely don’t want to miss out on this special couple day and want to prepare some special vday surprises for Taenggu whom I’ve been seeing as my lover.
To continue the past years’ tradition of making paper pixelated artworks to celebrate this day, what started off as a simple idea to make a pixelated picture of red roses eventually evolved into a richer composition that involves the story between The Little Prince and his rose that he loves and protects in a glass dome bell jar. And from the typical A4 size paper pixelated artworks I did in the previous years, I have now moved on to an even larger scale of 12×12 inch paper. Each individual pixel square is 0.5×0.5 cm. I didn’t do the counting, but I believed I had cut and pasted at least 200 pieces of such pixel squares of different colours for this artwork altogether. I spent a few days during the Chinese New Year holidays, over weekends and after work tirelessly working on it while also concurrently making artworks for Sooyoung and Ginger whose birthdays fall in the same month of February (see posts For Sooyoung: Spring Is Coming As You Wish and For Ginger: Share Your Toy With Your Little Brother Zero). With all the hard work put in, I’m really satisfied with how it overall turns out at the end!
Some detail shots of my final piece! 🔍
As if an artwork like this isn’t enough, I want to complement it with a real-life rose in the same glass dome jar as how it appears in my artwork! I managed to find a similar looking one for sale on Carousell. Although I had to spend quite a sum of money and travel quite a bit to collect it from the seller personally, it was all worth it. It’s a real preserved rose that can last 1 or 2 years and the jar comes with lighting and packaging too. 😍

I was so bent on making this artwork and the real-life rose in glass dome jar come true in reality! Hope Taenggu likes my presents I’ve specially planned and prepared these few weeks and also The Little Prince idea behind it all. Interestingly, I noticed something similar between this year’s artwork and last year’s VDay 2018: Love Spell From Harry Potter. Both The Little Prince and Harry Potter wear a scarf around their necks! Hahaha. If last year I was Harry Potter who casts love spells, then this year I will turn into The Little Prince who loves and protects Taenggu as if she is my only one, unique rose. 🌹
The Little Prince is in fact no stranger between us two. I had talked about how The Little Prince had helped to tide me through one of my darkest depression periods during a devastating trip in Seoul in 2015 in my post Memories of Korea Trip 2015 – Quotes from The Little Prince: True Colours Are Seen With The Heart where I shared some of my favourite quotes and thoughts from The Little Prince story. My visit to Petite France located at the outskirts of Seoul marked my very first encounter with The Little Prince and that’s where I felt that I was beginning to learn how to navigate myself through this difficult giant maze of my relationship with Taenggu by adopting his attitude towards life.
I guess it’s appropriate for me to share some of the photos I took back then at Petite France over here. 😌📸
It’s worth mentioning that Taenggu herself had also visited Petite France before when she was there to film the variety show “Intimate Note” with the other SNSD members in 2009. Yup, I had watched that episode when I was still a very young, innocent new fan of SNSD ㅋㅋ. You can watch the full episode with english subtitles below.
Last year, to uphold the theme of my Harry Potter art piece, I brought Taenggu to a Harry Potter themed café (read post: VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL: THE FOURTH). This year, ideally, I would have wanted to bring her to a café that is The Little Prince themed too. There used to be one located in Toa Payoh a few years ago (read about the café here) but has already ceased operations by now. What a pity! But fret not! I’ve found another French café called Antoinette which fits my The Little Prince theme whose story was written by a French author named Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and also has a perfect ambience for a valentine date. Looking forward to a romantic dinner at Antoinette tonight! Will most likely be writing about our dinner experience under Category: Extra Special Days With Taenggu soon!
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY, MY ONLY ONE, UNIQUE LOVE! Take good care of this artwork and the rose! I love you dearly. 💜
