“Don’t let anyone trample on your daisies… Not even you.”

Not long after Taenggu’s birthday on 9th March, it was White Day, probably the most celebrated couple day in Korea after Valentine’s Day. In Korean culture, women present chocolates to men as gifts on Valentine’s Day. One month later, men are supposed to return the favour by buying two to three times more expensive gifts for the women on White Day. In the relationship between me and Taenggu where there is no distinction between men and women, I see White Day as a couple day where we would gift each other with chocolates and candies.
I remember I used to buy a packet of Hershey’s Kisses and fold a simple white heart-shaped origami for Taenggu on White Day in 2015.
This year, I had specially chosen 2 packets of her favourite gummies, a big bar of white chocolate and a bag of cookies and cream Hershey’s Kisses for her.
As for an artwork I always do for any other couple days on the 14th of each month, I chose to do some simple quick fan edits this time. On one hand, I felt really tired and physically drained out from all the recent activities and events that I thought maybe I wouldn’t do anything this time. On other hand, I wanted to do SOMETHING. At least something to show that I’ve tried making some effort to commemorate this day.
I tried to seek for an inspiration for this White Day. “What is something that is white and related to us that I can do?” I closed my eyes as I asked myself. I thought about snow, I thought about snowflakes, I thought about Olaf, then, the image of a white daisy came into my mind. It was a refreshing idea, something new I could do, I thought.
If I were to give Taenggu a real-life white daisy, it would most likely be already withered by the time it reached her. So initially, I thought about making my own 2D white daisy out of the usual paper cutting I often do. But due to time constraints, I decided to make some fan edits using white daisy as a theme first.
The following edits are like a storyboard. It’s about how I would give Taenggu a daisy to sweeten up her day during difficult times and how she could even use it like an amulet to protect herself from harm and danger. 🌼
After I posted the above fan edits on instagram on White Day, a voice asked me sweetly, “Will you be my daisy?” I intuitively replied, “Yes, I do.”
As for the white daisy paper art, I will find time to make it slightly later and hopefully send it to her by next month in the form of a card. I will update this post with a picture of my artwork when it is completed too!
HAPPY WHITE DAY TO YOU! I will always be your daisy. Keke. 💜
